What are the preconditions for seeing a rainbow?

There are three basic conditions that have to be fulfilled before an atmospheric rainbow appears:

• Bright sunlight shining through clear air.
• A curtain of falling rain in the near to middle distance.
• An observer in the right place at the right time.
