About the diagram

Is it a rabbit or is it a duck? It may appear to be one or the other but it never appears to be both at the same time. A healthy outlook on what we see in the world around us involves scepticism about how things appear. As our eyes and brains work together to compose images of the world around us they do not function like a camera. When it comes to perception, assumptions, bias, previous experience, expectations and prejudice can all play their part in how things appear.

The original painting from which this drawing was developed was created by Tim O-Brian and was originally published in Nautilus Magazine.
